A G licence allows the licence holder to drive any car, van, small truck, or a combination of a vehicle plus a towed vehicle up to a weight of 11,000 kg (maximum weight of towed vehicle alone is 4,600 kg).
A G licence holder is not permitted to drive a motorcycle, air-brake equipped vehicle (bus or transport truck), or any other large vehicle.
Most Ontario residents will seek a G licence after their first year of licencing.

In order to apply for a G licence, there are a couple of requirements. They include:
Pass the G1 test: Cost is $158.25 and the test is made up of 40 multiple-choice questions, which are divided into two separate sections: rules of the road and road signs. You must correctly answer a minimum of 16 questions in each section to pass the written knowledge test. To take a sample test, click here.
The fee for your test will cover the written exam as well as your drive test to get a G2 license, though you have to pay an extra $15.75 if you need to retake the knowledge test.
Once you are 16, you may test for your G1, and then you must hold the license for a year, or eight months if you’re in a driver training program before you can take a driving test and get a G2 license; all in all, the licensing process takes about two years.
Hold a valid G2 licence for at least 1 year (8 months if driver has completed a recognized driver training program).
To acquire a G2 licence, a driver must complete a knowledge test and short road test.
Pass a vision test.
If a driver passes these requirement, then they will need to pass a further road examination that can last up to 45 minutes. It will test the driver in all areas of their driving abilities, including parking and highway driving. You can click here for more information.

How To Get Your Vehicle Ready for G Licence Test Ontario
If you're looking to apply for your G licence, we recommend you get in contact with your local service centre as your vehicle must meet certain standards in order to pass a basic check to ensure it’s fit for the purpose.
Per the Drive Test website, “If the vehicle you bring to the road test does not meet Ministry of Transportation (MTO) standards for the purpose of a road test - or if there is a non-vehicle-related reason for which the examiner determines that the test cannot be completed - the examiner will declare the road test “out-of-order.’”
This applies to a vehicle you own and to a vehicle you have borrowed (whether from a parent, friend, or driving instructor) or rented.
If the vehicle is declared out-of-order, you lose 50 percent of your road test fee; the other 50% remains as a credit on your driving record and may be applied when booking a new test.
Hansma Automotive can make sure your vehicle passes the vehicle check so you can confidently take to the road for your test. Contact us today to book an appointment for all services or general maintenance.

You must attend a mandatory treatment program for the third and any subsequent offences within 10 years
You will be required to use an ignition interlock device for at least six months for third and subsequent offence within 10 years

Note: G Licensed drivers under age 21 or under and drivers of any age with G1, G2, M1, or M2 licenses are not permitted to have any alcohol in their blood when behind the wheel.
