Datamoshing For Mac
In our second installment on Glitch Art we’re going to look at a type of glitch that is made using the compression artifacts from digital video called datamoshing.
Datamoshing visual effects usually appear like small colorful squares sprinkled across a screen like confetti. You may have seen similar effects unintentionally when streaming digital video and there is a lag in the Internet connection that makes the video appear to decompose. Datamoshing itself is the process of intentionally damaging or combining the input from two media files to create distortion effects on playback.
A method for datamoshing all withing After effects! Thanks to Plugin Play fro aescripts.com that is now a thing. I talk about how to install, use, my favorite looks, workarounds, and pros and cons. What datamoshing does is it gets rid of the new full picture frames and instead only keeps the frames that tell the pixels where to go. What results is a new video moving based on another videos directions or an image from the same video where the pixels go in directions they’re not suppose to.
Datamoshing became popular as a visual effect in 2005 and was seen in use during live video sets and in music videos. Original application of datamoshing required a bit more technical knowledge but now there are plugins that have been created to simulate the effect for Quartz Composer and Adobe After Effects.
- A common datamoshing technique is to turn one thing into another by composing shots next to one another. You probably want to do this, and doing so is easy: export each of your clips with the max interval settings, and then drag them one at a time into avidemux in the order you want them to be in.
- Traditional 'datamoshing' involves removing I-frames from encoded videos to create encoding artifacts that appear to make frames melt into one another by inheriting the motion of the incoming footage. This is cool but the result is a moving still frame - we want a moving outgoing picture.

To create datamoshing without a plug-in it can be done through the use of an app like avidemux 2.5.6. The process basically involves the destruction of I-Frames in a video. I-Frames are the keyframes that create the actual image on the screen, other kinds of frames hold other information but the I-Frames create the general shape and contour of a video image. If you destroy or corrupt I-Frames you unintentionally get the datamoshing effect because there is nothing telling the previous image where to stop and become the next image. In short, without keyframes, a video becomes like visual soup.

Create a datamoshed/databent video that is at least 30 seconds long. Bake (export) your final video as a quicktime movie. You may shoot your own source footage, use footage from the interwebs, or combine both. Name your video yourlastname.mov and put it in the 330 google drive folder called 'datamosh project.'

To databend an image file, just change its file suffix to .txt, open it in a text editor, mess up some of the code, save it, then change its file suffix back to whatever it originally was. Sometimes this works better than other times. To databend a video file, do the same thing, but it's trickier. We will discuss it in class.
